How to Install Wall Stickers

Wall stickers are one of the quickest ways to refresh a room without paint, tools or mess. Get the application right and your design will sit flat, stay put and look as crisp as the day you put it up. Watch our short walkthrough on the right, then follow the steps below to install your wall stickers cleanly the first time.

Step by step

1. Prepare the wall. Wipe the area with a clean damp cloth to remove dust and grease, then let it dry fully. Avoid freshly painted walls for at least three weeks.
2. Mark your position. Hold the sticker against the wall and mark the top corners lightly in pencil. A spirit level helps keep horizontal designs straight.
3. Peel the backing paper. Lay the sticker face down on a flat surface and slowly peel the white backing away at a low angle, leaving the design on the clear transfer film.
4. Apply from the top. Line the top corners up with your pencil marks and press them on first. Smooth downwards with the flat of your hand, working from the centre outwards to push out any air.
5. Burnish the design. Rub firmly across every part of the sticker through the transfer film. This is what bonds the vinyl to the wall.
6. Remove the transfer film. Peel the clear film back on itself at a sharp angle, very slowly. If a piece of vinyl lifts with it, press the film back down, rub that area, and try again.
7. Tidy up. Press down any loose edges by hand. If a small bubble remains, prick it with a pin and smooth the air out.

Quick tips

• Apply at normal room temperature, between 15 and 25 degrees, for the strongest stick.
• Smooth, painted plaster works best. Heavily textured, damp or freshly painted walls can cause peeling.
• Two pairs of hands make life much easier on larger designs.
