How to install wall stickers
Wall stickers change a room in an afternoon with no paint, no dust and no tools beyond what is already in the drawer. This guide covers the full process for every sticker in our range, from foil and marble to grille, metal and soft stone finishes.

Check the wall first
Almost every failed sticker comes down to the surface underneath it, not the sticker. Two minutes spent here saves you redoing the job later.
Sticks well to
- Smooth painted plaster, fully cured
- Emulsion, satin and eggshell finishes

- Sealed wood, MDF and laminate

it an hour, then pull. If it lifts paint or comes away with dust on the back,
the wall needs cleaning or sealing before you apply the sticker.

The installation, step by step
Work at normal room temperature, between 15°C and 25°C. Adhesive goes sluggish in the cold and over-tacky in direct heat, so avoid a wall in full afternoon sun.
Unroll and rest the sticker
Lay the sticker flat, design side up, and leave it for a few hours, or overnight if it has travelled in cold weather. This lets the vinyl relax out of its roll memory so it lies flat on the wall instead of curling at the edges.
Clean the wall and let it dry
Wipe the area with a cloth dampened in plain water and let it dry completely. Skip sprays, polish and anything with a wax or silicone in it: those leave a film that stops the adhesive gripping.
Position and mark
Hold the sticker against the wall, step back and check it from across the room. When you are happy, mark the top two corners in light pencil and use a level to confirm the line is true. Tape the top edge in place as a hinge so the design cannot shift.
For a design above furniture, sit down first and check the height from where you
will actually see it. Most people hang wall art around 15 cm too high.
Peel the backing paper away
Turn the sticker face down on a table and pull the white backing paper away from the design at a low angle, almost flat against itself, rather than lifting it straight up. The design stays on the clear transfer film. If a piece of vinyl tries to stay on the backing, lay it down again, rub that spot firmly and carry on.
Apply from the top down
Line the top corners up with your pencil marks and press them on first. Then smooth downwards with a squeegee or the flat of your hand, working from the centre out to each edge in overlapping strokes. Pushing the air ahead of you like this is what keeps bubbles out.
Burnish the whole design
Go over every part of the sticker again, firmly, through the transfer film. Pay extra attention to fine detail, thin lettering and corners. This is the step that actually bonds the vinyl, and it is the one most people rush.
Remove the transfer film
Starting at a top corner, peel the clear film back on itself at a sharp angle, close to 180 degrees, and go slowly. If any vinyl lifts with the film, press it back down, rub that section again and resume from a different corner.
Finish the edges
Press around every edge with your thumb, rub out the pencil marks with a soft eraser, and prick any remaining bubble with a pin before smoothing the air towards the hole. Leave the design alone for 24 hours while the adhesive reaches full strength.
If something goes wrong
Most problems are fixable on the spot. Work through these before starting again.
The vinyl lifts with the transfer film
Lay the film straight back down over that section and burnish it hard for fifteen seconds, then peel again from a different direction. The adhesive on the wall side simply has not been given enough pressure yet.
There are bubbles under the design
Small bubbles under 5 mm usually disappear within a week as the air works its way out. For anything larger, pierce the edge of the bubble with a pin and press the air towards the hole with your thumb.
An edge or corner keeps peeling back
Lift the loose section, wipe underneath with a dry cloth to remove dust, then press it back and hold for thirty seconds. If it lifts again, the wall paint is likely too chalky or textured to hold vinyl on its own.
The sticker is crooked and already on the wall
Peel it off slowly at a shallow angle while it is still fresh, keeping the vinyl as flat as you can, and reposition. Most designs tolerate one reposition; after that the adhesive picks up dust and loses grip.
The design has creased on itself
Separate it gently rather than pulling. A crease in the vinyl will show as a white line, so if it has folded permanently, apply that section slightly stretched to flatten the mark before burnishing.
Living with it, and taking it off
Everyday care
Dust with a dry or barely damp cloth. Keep cleaning sprays, abrasive pads and solvents away from the edges. They creep underneath and break the bond. Foil and metal finishes keep their sheen best when wiped in the direction of the grain.
Removing it later
Warm one corner with a hairdryer on low for about thirty seconds, then peel back slowly at a shallow angle, reheating as you go. Any adhesive left behind lifts with a little soapy water. On sound, cured paint this leaves no mark.
